Liu Dunzhen: First Academician of CAS from Xinning County

Liu Dunzhen (1897.9.19-1968.5.10), styled Shineng, also known as the owner of the Dazhuang Room, a native of Xinning county, Hunan province,is a modern architecture expert, an architectural historian,and one of the pioneers of Chinese architectural education and Chinese ancient architecture research, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences(member of the faculty).

He founded China’s first architect firm run by a Chinese. He has been engaged in architectural education and architectural history research for a long time. He is one of the founders of architectural education in China and a pioneer of Chinese architectural history research. His investigation of ancient buildings in north and southwest of China and the systematic research on Chinese traditional houses and gardens have laid the main foundation for this discipline. He has organized and presided over the compilation of national architectural history many times, and published influential monographs such as “Suzhou’s Classical Gardens”.

In 1956, he published the monograph “Introduction to Chinese Housing”, which set off an upsurge of comprehensive research in this field in domestic academic circles. He led his assistants in detailed surveying and mapping of large, medium and small typical gardens in Suzhou. During the eight or nine years, he drew more than 2,000 surveying papers, photographed more than 20000 pieces and wrote more than 100000 words. Unfortunately this work was interrupted by the “Cultural Revolution”, and the manuscript was compiled and published by his assistants and descendants in 1979. After publication, it became well-known both at home and abroad, and was translated into English and Japanese for publication. He called together the old, middle-aged and young academic elites in architectural history and some archaeological circles, presided over and compiled “A Brief History of Chinese Architecture” and “History of Ancient Chinese Architecture”, which lasted 7 years, revised 8 times, and finally publised in 1966. These two book are still important reference books, and won the special prize of National University Excellent Textbook in 1988.

King Yao‘s Feast: a Pure Luxury You Can Enjoy in Langshan Mountain

Langshan Mountain in Xinning county, located in the southern border of western Hunan province, is a gathering place for many ethnic groups, in which the Yao nationality has distinctive customs such as diet, living, funeral and other customs. It is reported that October 16 of each year is the traditional “King Pan Festival” of the Yao nationality in Xinning county. On that day, guests to the Yao village will receive the most enthusiastic hospitality and enjoy the most noble King Yao banquet. The “King Yao Feast” in Langshan mountain developed accordingly.

The specific process of the “King Yao Feast” is divided into five parts: first, open the mountain gate to welcome the guests, and the “King Yao” sits down in person, beating the drums and setting off firecrackers to welcome the guests; second, stop the guests at the door and ask them to drink. The girls sing Yao songs while toasting and sending blessings to the guests; the third is King Yao’s banquet. In addition to camellia oil, there are six main dishes, four side dishes, two snacks, total twelve hearty delicacies to entertain guests; the fourth is the drinking song, after the banquet, Yao girls carry special rice wine, sing drinking songs and toast table by table; The fifth is rock dance. During dinner time, the Yao girls dance around the guests, and the guests can participate in the interaction. The whole “King Yao Feast” has strong national color, warm atmosphere and strong interaction.

Langshan Unique Food: Stir-fried Liver with Plant Soot

With the development of Xinning county’s tourism, the inheritance of intangible culture and the promotion of folk culture have made stir-fried liver with plant soot, a farm special dish, become more and more well-known.

The origin of food: Stir-fried pig liver with plant soot originated in some rural areas of Xinning county. In the era of material shortage, villagers engaged in physical labor for a long time, were malnourished and prone to eye diseases. They would fry this dish at home. In fact, the scientific name of pot ash( 锅灰) is “plant soot” (百草霜), which is a traditional Chinese medicine that has the effect of clearing away heat and detoxification.

Plant Soot

Li Shizhen’s Compendium of Materia Medica in the Ming Dynasty and Miao Xiyong’s Classics of Materia Medica recorded that ” plant soot is formed by smoke, its taste is pungent and its qi is non-toxic.” Therefore, it has high medicinal value and was used by folks in Song Dynasty to treat dysentery. Although this special stired-liver looks dark and squishy, it tastes really different from ordinary pig liver. It is smooth, fresh and tender, the taste is very unique and special.

How To Make It

Ingredients: 320 grams of pig liver, 10 grams of plant soot, 50 grams of lard, 2 grams of salt, 5 grams of dried chili joints, 5 grams of dried chili powder, 5 grams of ginger, 5 grams of garlic, 5 grams of garlic sprouts.

Notes: 1. Pig liver must be fresh; 2. The source of pot ash must be firewood, straw or corn stalk burned under iron pot in the countryside.

Stir-fried Liver with Plant Soot

Production Steps:

  1. To make this dish, first scrape the pot ash, and after scraping, put it in a bowl and filter it with gauze. Then select the best fat liver, wash it with clean water, and slice it. The thickness is moderate to ensure that the liver can be evenly heated and tasted. Put a spoonful of lard in the pan while frying.
  2. Heat the oil in the pan to high temperature, add garlic and ginger to saute until fragrant, then put the liver in it.
  3. Stir-fry the liver with high heat. When it is almost cooked, add garlic sprouts and peppers. The last key step is to put the plant soot in the pot, so that the fried liverbe scorched outside and tender inside. Don’t put too much plant soot in the pot, otherwise it will taste bitter.
  4. Take the fried liver out from the pan and put it on the plate.

Live streaming boosts Langshan tourism and sales of navel orange

On November 20th, the 7th China Langshan Navel Orange Cultural Tourism Festival “Internet Celebrity Live Streaming” was officially launched. The live event lasted for two days from November 20th to 21st. Zeng Xiaoming, researcher of Shaoyang Bureau of Commerce, Peng Hongbing, deputy secretary of Xinning County Party committee and head of Xinning County People’s government, Xu Lihua, chairman of Xinning County CPPCC, Deng Kaili, deputy head of Xinning County People’s government and other leaders attended the live event.

Liqin, Yao Qi and other influencers with millions of fans and 50 outstanding local liver streamers in Shaoyang city and Xinning county introduced Langshan tourism and Langshan navel orange through live broadcasting, which attracted a total of more than 6 million people to watch online and won 2.2 million of likes.

Xinning County is one of the four bigest navel orange export base counties in China. Its navel orange planting area is 500,000 mu, with an annual output of 700,000 tons and an annual output value of 5 billion yuan. Xinning county has successively won a series of honorary titles such as the first batch of pollution-free fruit production demonstration counties in China, the national standardized production base of green food raw materials, etc.

The Academic Committee of Jincheng Academy officially inaugurated

On November 21, the academic committee of Jincheng Academy was officially inaugurated though it was cold and rainy outside. Xiao Jianfeng, the dean of Jincheng Academy, officially issued the member certificates to 6 members including Zhou Guanghui and Zhou Xiaobo. Zhou Guanghui was co-elected as the deputy dean of Jincheng Academy.

Xiao Jianfeng briefed the participants on the work done by the academy over the past three years since its establishment and its future work plans, and in particular highly affirmed the academy’s achievements in tapping the traditional culture and cultural celebrities of Xinning county. Langshan FPV Drone Racing Invitational Tournament Closed

On November 20, 2021, the Langshan FPV Drone Racing Invitational Tournament was successfully held in Langshan Scenic Area of Xinning county, Hunan province. The organizer took Chili Peak as the main body to build a “racetrack”, creating a cool racetrack of “Seeing Langshan from the air”.

The aerobatic drones flew over the navel orange orchard, kicking off the prelude of the race and showing the navel orange picking at a close distance. Obstacle track is set at the foot of the Chilli Peak for speed crossing. After stopping at the foot of Chilli Peak, the FPV Drones quickly climbed to the top of the mountain, and finally turned its head and fell rapidly from the top of the mountain, completing a thrilling and interesting “cliff jumping flight”.

Jianxin Jiang from Langshan Elected as an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering

On November 18, the Chinese Academy of Engineering(CAE) officially announces the 2021 academician cooptation list, and Professor Jianxin Jiang from the Third Military Medical University is elected as an academician.

Jianxin Jiang was born in Xinning county, Hunan province in December 1962. In August 1980, he was admitted to the department of clinical medicine of the Third Military Medical University and enlisted in the army. He is now the director of the Fourth Research Office of the Field Surgery Research Institute of the Third Military Medical University, the director of the the Military Transportation Medicine Research Institute, the director of the State Key Laboratory of Trauma, Burns and Compound Injuries, the director of the Military Transportation Medicine Key Laboratory, Researcher, and Doctoral Supervisor .

Jianxin Jiang is mainly engaged in the research on the mechanism, prevention and treatment of shock injuries and traffic accident injuries, as well as the basic research of related trauma.

The Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) is the highest honorary and advisory academic institution in the nation’s fields of engineering sciences and technology. It is dedicated to uniting outstanding talents in engineering to lead innovation and development in China. The highest decision-making body in the CAE is the General Assembly, which selects new members every two years through voting. The CAE has nine academic divisions, six special committees and one general administration department. Leaders of the CAE are elected entirely by CAE Members. The current president is Xiaohong Li.

Membership with the CAE is the highest academic title in engineering sciences and technology in China, representing the highest academic level and reputation in the engineering community.

The 7th Langshan Navel Orange Cultural Tourism Festival Opened

On November 20, 2021, the opening ceremony of the 7th China Langshan Navel Orange Cultural Tourism Festival was held in Yuehan village, Jinshi Town, Xinning County, Hunan Province. Nearly 100 merchants and large growers gathered here to taste oranges and sign orders. Cheers and laughter floated over the harvest orchard.

Navel oranges harvest attracts visitors with fragrance. This year’s Navel Orange Cultural Tourism Festival is another a “highlight” of “oranges”. Live streaming training helps the sales of Langshan navel orange

On November 15th,  the new farmer’s Tiktok live streaming  public welfare training course in Yuehan village, Xinning county entered the third day. With the help of the instructor, the trainees were conducting a live trial broadcast according to the sales script provided by the teacher. The trainees took turns in groups of four. On the stage, the anchor and the deputy interacted, and the scene was hot.

Yuehan village has a long history of planting navel orange, in the 1990s, its navel orange base was listed as one of the four major export navel orange bases in China by the ministry of foreign trade. It enjoys a glorious past.  Last year, it won the reputation of “the first navel orange village in the world”, which is the pride of Yuehan villagers today.

This Tiktok live streaming  public welfare training was initiated by Xinning Longfeng Fruit Industry Company. The aim is to build a Langshan navel orange online celebrity village and implement the “three two-hundreds” goal, that is, a professional navel orange village with 600 households to have 200 households engaged in professional planting, 200 households specialized in processing, and 200 households specialized in marketing. Therefore, the traininig course focuses on the practical operation of trainees, stressing the training of the live streaming process such as sales script planning, on-the-shelf merchandise display, launch test, and short video drainage.

The biodiversity of Langshan Mountain: Fish World

The Fuyi River National Wetland Park was listed in the first batch of national wetland parks. After investigation, there are 36 species of fish in the Fuyi River National Wetland Park, belonging to 5 orders and 12 families. The fish species in the wetland park account for 1.10% of China fish species and 17.91% of the fish species in Hunan Province.

Among the rare fish resources, 7 species are unique in China. The are Acrossocheilus fasciatus, Hemibarbus labeo, Gnathopogon wolterstorffi, Misgurnus mizolepis Gunther, Mystus pelusius,Odontobutis obscurus and Ctenogobius giurinus. In addition, 3 of these 16 species of fish belong to China’s endemic fishes, namely Rhodeus sinensis, Cobitis sinensis and Mastacembelus aculeatus.
